The Wireless Communications Research Group at Electronics Engineering Department of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, in Valparaíso, Chile is offering positions for Ph. D. students and post-doctoral researchers. The areas of interest include

Excellence in Internationally-Recognized Research

The Electronics Engineering Department offers excellent opportunities for professional development providing support for theoretical as well as empirical works. Communications laboratory equipment includes microwave generators, spectrum analyzers, a vector network analyzer, synthesized signal sources, up to date computational resources and specialized software, as well as custom designed measurement systems including a 4×4 MIMO channel sounder and an RF anechoic chamber.

The Communication research group has established solid research partnerships with prestigious institutions such as INRS (Canada), Bell-Laboratories (Lucent Technologies, USA), National University of Singapore, Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands), and Varna Technical University (Bulgaria). Academic exchange with these institutions, for both researchers and students, is continuously supported for the development of scientific projects and thesis-oriented research.

Attractive location

Valparaiso, declared by UNESCO a heritage of humanity, is a scenic harbor city located on the Pacific coast. It is co-located with Vina del Mar, a principal summer resort of Western South America. The modern and vibrant city of Santiago, the Chilean capital, is easily accessible by bus. Chile offers to the foreigner a particularly attractive blend of latin hospitality and modern way of living, and is country of incredible visiting possibilities, particularly for nature-lovers, with many breath-taking national parks.

Requirements and Conditions

The ability to read and write in technical English is a fundamental requirement.

Ph. D. students
Classes are taught in Spanish. Program consists of 3 terms of regular coursework and a series of research-oriented seminars. One paper accepted in a major journal is required before the thesis can be defended. Tuition waiver and scholarships are available. Qualified students receive financial support to cover living expenses for a single person.

Post-doctoral Researchers
Candidates must have shown their ability to carry out top-level research and the selection will be based on the quality of published papers. Basic knowledge of Spanish is useful but not indispensable. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and should be in the range of US $1,400/month (after taxes). This covers living expenses for two people. Attractive incentives are offered on per accepted-journal-papers basis. Part-time teaching is also available. A two year contract, subject to evaluation at the end of the first year is offered.
