The research in the area of Wireless Communications at the Department of Electronics Engineering of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María has focused on a combination of empirical propagation studies and mathematical modeling of narrowband and wideband SISO and MIMO radio channels. The ultimate purpose is to provide the system designer with a useful insight into the behavior of the medium which will have to support the various services envisioned for present and future wireless communications. Work so far has concentrated in Fixed Wireless Access. This area is of particular relevance for countries such as Chile, where wireline communications do not provide high speed data access to many locations that are relevant for its rapidly growing economy, particularly in rural areas where modern technology is a basic requirement for the production and distribution processes. Research topics cover areas ranging from electromagnetic studies of antennas and the propagation environment to protocols used over wireless channels.
